Pourier Family Celebrates Home Ownership With Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity

BOX ELDER, S.D. – Together with South Dakota Housing Development Authority (SDHDA) and the Pourier family, Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity will celebrate the dedication of a home in Box Elder. The dedication ceremony of the Pourier home was held on June 27.

“Home dedications sum up months of hard work by our homeowners, volunteers, staff, sponsors, and so many other members of our community,” remarks Scott Engmann, Executive Director of Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity.” The completion of this home is made possible in collaboration with SDHDA and their HOME program. The primary purpose of the HOME Program is to expand the supply of decent, safe, sanitary, and affordable housing for very low-income and low-income households. Funds from the HOME program provide valuable resources to help in the construction of decent, affordable housing. To date, Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity has accessed over $1.2 million dollars in SDHDA funds to purchase land, build homes and provide down payment assistance to qualified families.

Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity provides a hand up in achieving independence through home ownership. Prospective homebuyers must commit to 250 hours per adult of ‘sweat equity’ building their own homes and the homes of other Habitat homeowners. Fifty-two of these hours are dedicated to homeownership preparation training including financial literacy, budget mentoring, and basic home maintenance skills. In addition, all Habitat partner families are required to meet income guidelines, show the ability to pay their mortgage and demonstrate need before they are accepted into the program.
