Hau Mitakuyapi,

On behalf of the Lakota Council of Tribes, Inc. located at the minimum security prison in Springfield, South Dakota, we would like to say “WOPIDA TANKA” to all the families, and outside supporters who traveled many miles to be a part of the Marietta Pacheco Memorial Wacipi.

WOPIDA TANKA to the Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribe and Lower Brule Sioux Tribe for donating buffalo meat.

Also, we would like to thank Associate Warden Rebecca Schieffer, our new Cultural Activity Coordinator Jonathan Fleek, and Special Security Lt. Loewe for making such a special day possible.

To date this was by far our biggest Wacipi yet, we had over 450 people in attendance, possibly the biggest prison Wacipi in the United States.

I can’t begin to explain what a memorable time we shared; the energy was so strong and uplifting. What I can say is that Marietta is a very special person who touched a lot of people’s lives, in homage of Marietta we will carry on.

Already we look forward to our next Wacipi currently scheduled for February 3, 2018. We welcome all dancers and drum groups, although you must pass a background check.

If you have any questions at all, I encourage you to please get in touch with our group:
