Niko Barnett Johnson “Wambli Ho Tanka”

Niko Barnett Johnson was born on November 2, 1997 in Gillette, WY to Debbie L. Bates and David W. Johnson. Niko made his journey to the Spirit World on November 12, 2017 at his home in Custer, SD.

Niko attended grade school in Deadwood, SD, Sturgis, SD, and Gillette, WY and attended high school in Custer, SD. During Niko’s school years he joined the football team and received many awards for his athletic capabilities. After high school, Niko attended the Box Elder Job Corps and received training in drywall installation and finishing and upon completion he was Union Certified. During his time at Job Corps, he received the golden perfect student award which means he was at the top of his class. Niko was a cook at Captains Table and worked as a construction specialist at William’s Properties of Spearfish, SD.

Niko’s passion was the outdoors, he loved snowboarding and skateboarding. He also enjoyed making music, rapping, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, and writing poetry. When Niko was in school, he received the young authors award for his exceptional work as a young author. His family traveled to Pierre, SD where the award was presented to Niko.

Niko is survived by his mother, Debbie Bates of Custer, SD; father, David W. Johnson of Bismarck, ND; sisters, Alisha Garneaux and LaRae Bargmann both of Custer, SD; and Erica Garneaux of Whitewood, SD; nephew, Jarred McNulty of Whitewood, SD; grandparents, Ethel Bates of Custer, SD, and Russell & Leah Johnson of Gillette, WY; fiancé, Ann Roxas of the Philippines; and numerous aunts, uncles, & cousins.

Niko was preceded in death by his grandfather, John Scott Bates, Sr.; and great grandparents, Nila & Joe Svara.

Memorial services were held for Niko at 2:00 PM, Friday, November 17, 2017 in the Community Meeting Room utilizing the North Entrance in the Custer County Courthouse Annex, Custer, SD, with President Keith Glover and Pastor Van Arp officiating.

Arrangements entrusted with Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge, SD.
