Four Candidates Vie For One Oglala Lakota County School Board Position

BATESLAND - Oglala Lakota County has scheduled a school board election for Tuesday, June 13; Mike Carlow’s term expires in July and there are four candidates interested in replacing Carlow on the board - Mary Young Bear, Chuck Conroy, Maurice Twiss and Pat Ross.

A newly elected board member would earn a three year term and be sworn in during the July board meeting. Carlow has decided not to run for reelection to the board. In addition to Carlow, current board members include Bryan Brewer(chair), Robert Two Crow(vice chair) and members Angie Eagle Bull and Dr. Richard Zephier.

If you are not registered to vote, the deadline to register is Monday, May 29; if you have questions about whether you are registered or not, call the Fall River/Oglala Lakota County auditor’s office at 605 745-5130.

Oglala Lakota County schools operate pre-school through eighth grade schools at Wolf Creek, Batesland, Rockyford and Red Shirt and a Virtual High School across the district. Close to 1,500 students attend school in the district. After building new school annexes at Batesland and Rockyford a few years ago, the district is looking at building a new school at Wolf Creek and a county high school that would offer technical and vocational courses of study.
